The Poppin Huis is your go-to for all things gourmet popcorn, candy, and one-of-a-kind gifts. A little salty and a little sweet together make the best treat!
The Poppin Huis re-opened in March of 2019 under the new ownership of a small family investment group. The day-to-day operations are managed by Ryan and Ashley Nelson, and supported by Lisa Sandor, Craig van Melle, and Ben and Katelyn Herrygers. One business partner learned the Poppin Huis was for sale in January 2019. In a matter of weeks, the investment group decided to make the leap and acquired the Poppin Huis brand.
The Poppin Huis was originally founded in 2015 for Darlene Schaap, the late wife of the original owner Randall Schaap, and designed to provide quality gourmet popcorn and vintage candy.
Although the tradition, vision, and quality of the original store and products remain intact, the Poppin Huis also sells unique gifts, children’s clothes and toys, special order gift baskets, a monthly subscription box, refillable tins, and more. Poppin Huis products are available in-person and most are also available online. Poppin Huis in-house products are also available for wholesale.
Ryan and Ashley Nelson are the managing partners of Poppin Huis. Ashley is also the owner of a digital service agency with clients all around the USA. She loves the Detroit Lions, cherry Blow Pop suckers, kettle corn, and coffee! Ryan has a deep history in the beverage and food service industry and is ecstatic to be a full-time “Popcorn and Candy Man.” He loves the Minnesota Vikings, all things chocolate, anything that Ashley cooks, and energy drinks!
Lisa Sandor (Ashley and Katelyn’s mother) is a part-owner and a Pre-K teacher for Fennville Public Schools with a retail and merchandising background. She previously owned a small gift shop called Truly Scrumptious in Canadian Lakes and a dance studio called Lisa’s School of Dance in Lakeview, New Era, Shelby, and Indian River. She loves kettle corn! She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren.
Craig van Melle is a part-owner and is a Real Estate Agent with Sneller Realty in Allegan who previously owned van Melle Studio Photography. He enjoys music and is part of the Bridgetown Band. He loves being on the water, playing the drums, and spending time with his grandchildren. He loves Caramel Popcorn and anything chocolate!
Ben and Katelyn Herrygers are part-owners of Poppin Huis. Ben is the Operations Finance Analyst at SpartanNash who previously worked at Trendway Corporation in Holland for 8 years. He’s a MSU fan, lover of sugary candies like Runtz, Skittles and mints, and his go-to popcorn choice is regular butter or caramel! Katelyn Herrygers is the Content and Community Manager at the national nonprofit Learning to Give. She loves reading and writing, Mounds candy bars, and a mixed bag of Cheddar and Caramel gourmet popcorn! Katelyn is also the author of the forthcoming book I am Me and future series Super Jay in our children’s toy line. Ben and Katelyn have one son, Jameson, who has Down syndrome. The mission and vision for Poppin Huis grew out of their love and dreams for Jay.
